Ancient Near Eastern wonders at Metropolitan Museum of Art
From September 22nd, 2014, to January 4th, 2015, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC) is holding an exhibition on ancient Near Eastern art. Assyria to Iberia at the Dawn of the Classical Age focuses on the artistic influence of the Assyrian Empire along the Mediterranean Basin around the eighth and seventh century BC. The exhibition displays more than 250 artworks on loan from Western Europe, the Caucasus, the Middle East, North Africa and the United States. It also draws parallels with the museum’s rich permanent collection of ancient Near Eastern art. Here is an elaborate review of the exhibition, intertwining the artworks with Middle Eastern current events, written by Pulitzer-winning critic Holland Cotter of the New York Times.
