About a year ago, Dr. Eliat Mazar from Hebrew University of Jerusalem and her team of archaeologists unearthed a trove of gold and silver objects by the southern wall of the Temple Mount. Research dated the hoard back to around 614 AD, at the time of the Persian conquest of Jerusalem; it could have been abandoned by the fleeing locals. The excavated treasures, including the prized four-inch gold medallion with sacred Jewish motifs (left), are now on display at the Israel Museum.
