The inaugural edition of Norton Anthology of World Religions
This past November, W. W. Norton & Company published the inaugural edition of Norton Anthology of World Religions. The anthology is divided into two volumes; the first features Hinduism, Buddhism and Daoism, and the second Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The choice of these six religions was based on their international prevalence and their relevance in the present-day world. Jack Miles of University of California at Irvine acted as general editor of the anthology. Miles’ scholarship in the domain has been especially noted for his 1995 Pulitzer-winning book God: A Biography, which analyzed and traced the history of textual representations of God. According to the New York Times review of the anthology, the project was first conceived around 2005, not long after 9/11 when interreligious understanding seemed more pressing than ever to the American public.
